Short answer
Choose what the stop must accomplish before choosing the exit. From south to north, compare Barstow/Yermo services, optional Calico, Clyde V. Kane, Baker, Valley Wells, then a Jean/southern Nevada checkpoint. Caltrans lists the two California rest-area pairs, but that listing does not prove they are open right now. Check private food, fuel, and charging directly, and trust current road, weather, and rest-area sources over an old itinerary.

Choose a useful stop
Give every stop one job
A useful stop fixes fatigue, fuel, charging, food, restroom, pet, or curiosity. A stop that tries to do all seven often becomes a small vacation you did not schedule.

Choose the next real need and place it before urgency. For charging, verify network, connector, access, and a backup; for food, verify the kitchen rather than the building hours.

Combine compatible tasks
A restroom, water refill, short walk, and meal can share one stop. Keep specialty detours separate so the group knows whether it is a break or part of the itinerary.

Set a leave-again time
Before parking, agree on the target departure. Recheck the road if conditions changed, and do not let the final desert segment begin with fatigue or an optimistic fuel gauge.

Know what comes next on I-15
Barstow/Yermo is the broad early service stop. Calico is a deliberate county-park detour, not an emergency facility. Clyde V. Kane follows at Newberry Springs. Baker is the later private-service and landmark stop. Valley Wells is the final Caltrans pair listed here before Nevada, and Jean/southern Nevada is a last official checkpoint before the Valley. Treat the order as orientation, never as an instruction to outlast fatigue, heat, low fuel, low charge, or an urgent passenger need.

Match the stop type to the actual need
An official rest area, private service cluster, charging search result, restaurant, attraction, and weather checkpoint answer different questions. If you need fuel or charging, a picnic table is irrelevant. If a driver is tired, a famous landmark farther north is not motivation. If accessibility, pets, or a trailer matter, confirm the entrance, surface, space, operating status, and exact facility rather than inferring them from a category label.
- For EV charging, filter the U.S. Department of Energy station locator for the vehicle and route, then confirm live operation, access, payment, speed, and compatibility with the responsible network.
- For fuel, food, restrooms, accessibility, pets, or trailers at a private stop, ask the named operator about the exact need and selected date.
- For an attraction detour, budget the exit, admission or access, visit, and return to I-15 separately from the required service stop.
What the official rest-area listing says
Caltrans lists restrooms, drinking water, picnic areas, a public phone, accessible facilities, and a pet area at both Clyde V. Kane and Valley Wells in both directions. It lists vending at Valley Wells. It does not list RV sanitation at either pair. The table was last updated August 15, 2023 and warns that temporary closures occur, so it cannot answer whether a facility is open now.
Treat private businesses as possible stops, not infrastructure
EddieWorld publishes its own Yermo information. In Baker, The Mad Greek and the World's Tallest Thermometer maintain official sites, and San Bernardino County operates Calico's official page. Those links identify possible stops; they do not promise live hours, restrooms, fuel, charging, food, accessibility, shade, queues, admission, or availability. No Primm business is listed because no current first-party page confirmed a useful bundle of services.
Check the right source for each changing detail
Use Caltrans QuickMap and I-15 conditions for California road context, Nevada 511 after the state line, the National Weather Service Las Vegas office for corridor weather, state pages for rest-area candidates, the federal station locator followed by the charging network for EV research, and the exact private operator for business services. The California Highway Patrol's roadside-emergency checklist belongs in the vehicle before the trip; a disabled vehicle in traffic or another dangerous location is an emergency-services problem, not an itinerary problem.
