How to research safety and reported crime across the Las Vegas Valley

Step 1: identify the responsible agency

A Las Vegas postal address can be inside the City of Las Vegas, unincorporated Clark County, or another jurisdiction. LVMPD serves the City of Las Vegas and much of unincorporated Clark County; Henderson and North Las Vegas operate separate police departments. Confirm jurisdiction before searching. Otherwise the clean map may merely be the wrong map.

Use the Clark County Assessor's jurisdiction field and the municipality's official boundary resources, then open the responsible police tool. If an address sits near a boundary, confirm directly with the agency.

Step 2: make the search reproducible

Record the exact address, agency, search date, radius or map extent, start and end dates, incident categories, and any filters. Repeat the same recipe for each candidate. A three-month burglary search cannot be compared honestly with a one-year all-incident map.

Save a screenshot or export if the tool allows, plus its legend and limitation text. Check whether points are offset, recent incidents are delayed, categories reflect initial reports or later classifications, and whether the tool excludes protected or sensitive records.

Step 3: interpret reported data without turning it into a verdict

The FBI says nonfederal agencies voluntarily submit UCR data. The FBI reviews contributed data, while agencies remain responsible for accurate submissions and corrections. Participation, reporting systems, offense definitions, classification, population, and time coverage can differ. A rate with missing months is not suddenly reassuring.

Reported crime does not include every incident; changes can reflect behavior, reporting, policing, classification, data systems, or actual incidence. Use trends as questions to investigate, not as a home's horoscope. Never convert a citywide rate or a map pin into ‘safe,’ ‘unsafe,’ ‘good,’ or ‘bad’ housing advice.

Step 4: test the life around the address

• Visit the property and parking area in daylight and after dark, lawfully and without trespassing.
• Drive or walk the actual work, transit, school, care, dog, and evening-return routes at their realistic times.
• Check lighting, sightlines, crossings, parking access, building entry, package handling, and who controls maintenance.
• Ask the responsible agency or property manager neutral, specific questions about records, response, access, and recurring conditions.
• For an immediate emergency call 911; do not use a research directory to self-route around emergency services.

Use a decision record, not a ranking

For each candidate, summarize the jurisdiction, official queries, practical route observations, property controls, unresolved questions, and recheck date. Keep household risk tolerance private and explicit. The conclusion should be ‘this evidence does or does not meet our stated requirements,’ not ‘people like us belong here.’
