Zero is not the whole return
California and Nevada taxes when you move: separate the questions
Short answer
Nevada does not levy an individual state income tax, but that fact alone does not determine what a California-to-Nevada mover will owe. Separate residency and domicile, part-year timing, California-source income, work location, business or equity income, property, sales and vehicle taxes, and federal tax. Build a dated facts file and have a qualified tax professional apply current law to the household before changing withholding, entity structure, or a transaction.

What matters most
- Nevada
- No individual state income tax
- California
- Residency + source-income questions remain
- Remote work
- Physical workdays and compensation facts matter
- Proof
- Consistent dated facts, not one magic document
Separate five tax questions before estimating savings
Citations: 1269Ask five questions independently: when residency changed, what income California can tax after that change, where services were physically performed, what property or business interests remain, and which other state and local taxes change. The answers may use different rules and evidence. A Nevada driver's license can be relevant without being a one-document tax invisibility cloak.
| Question | Facts to assemble | Responsible answer |
|---|---|---|
| Residency and domicile | Homes, presence, work, family, records, possessions, intent, and chronology | Current law applied by a qualified tax or legal professional |
| Income sourcing | Income type, payer, service location, transaction, business, and dates | California rules and case-specific advice |
| Part-year filing | Move date, income periods, withholding, estimates, and returns | Current FTB forms and preparer analysis |
| Property and transactions | California sale or rental, Nevada purchase, ownership, basis, use, and timing | Tax, legal, title, and transaction professionals as applicable |
| Other taxes and costs | Property, sales/use, vehicles, business, payroll, and federal facts | The responsible agency and professional |
Understand what Nevada's zero means, and what it does not
Citations: 19Nevada's constitution prohibits an individual income tax. That can materially change a household comparison, but it does not eliminate federal income tax, payroll tax, property tax, sales or use tax, vehicle costs, business taxes, or another state's lawful claim to income within its jurisdiction. Do not multiply salary by California's top marginal rate and label the result guaranteed savings.
Use the estimator as a planning model with visible assumptions, then replace every placeholder with the current filing status, taxable-income, sourcing, property, location, and transaction facts used by the professional analysis.
Build a residency chronology rather than a souvenir folder
Citations: 234Create a dated chronology of homes, presence, employment, work locations, household moves, important possessions, vehicle and voter records, professional relationships, mail, utilities, insurance, property use, and continuing California connections. FTB guidance describes residency and domicile as fact-intensive. No single checklist item necessarily decides the result.
Keep documents because they accurately reflect what happened, not because they were collected to manufacture a narrative. Consistency across actions and records is more useful than a dramatic stack of Nevada receipts from one weekend.
Remote work needs a workday record
Citations: 24Obtain written employer authorization for permanent Nevada work and ask payroll, benefits, licensing, insurance, and tax advisers how the arrangement is handled. Record where services are physically performed and keep California workdays distinct from travel, vacation, and Nevada workdays. Compensation type and employer or business facts can change the analysis.
Do not assume that a California employer makes all wages California-source or that a Nevada home makes all compensation Nevada-only. Use current FTB guidance and case-specific advice.
Keep California property and business interests in their own lane
Citations: 26A California home sale, retained rental, pass-through entity, business activity, deferred compensation, stock compensation, pension, or other income stream can create questions distinct from residency. Gather the contracts, dates, basis records, service periods, transaction documents, entity records, and professional contacts before the move makes them harder to find.
Roby can help with Southern Nevada real estate within his Nevada license and can help coordinate the Nevada-side housing timeline. He does not list California property, determine California representation, or provide tax or legal advice. Use appropriately licensed California real-estate and tax or legal professionals for those parts of the plan.
Compare property, sales, and vehicle taxes accurately
Citations: 678910California and Nevada property-tax systems use different assessment mechanics. Compare the actual California bill with a parcel- and purchase-specific Nevada estimate, including applicable districts and assessments. Do not transfer a county average or a neighbor's bill to a candidate property.
Sales tax varies by location, and vehicle registration or other costs depend on the actual vehicle and agency process. These may be smaller than income and housing differences, but they belong in the same complete household ledger.
Prepare the professional meeting with three scenarios
Citations: 358Bring the current return, income and work-location detail, entity and equity-compensation records where applicable, properties, expected move chronology, California connections, planned Nevada home, and questions about withholding or estimates. Ask for a low, expected, and high planning case plus the facts that would move one case into another.
Do not change withholding, estimated payments, entity operations, a property transaction, or material residency actions solely from a website estimate. The most valuable output is often the list of missing facts, which is less thrilling than a giant green savings number and considerably more useful.
Frequently asked questions
Does Nevada have a state individual income tax?
Nevada does not levy an individual state income tax. That does not eliminate federal tax or California tax on income California may lawfully tax under current rules.
Does getting a Nevada driver's license end California residency?
No single record automatically determines a fact-intensive residency and domicile analysis. Build a complete chronology and obtain qualified advice.
Can California still tax income after I move?
Potentially, depending on residency, income source, work location, property, business, transaction, compensation, and other facts. Use current FTB guidance and a qualified professional.
